Key Switching Success – Glorious Modular Mechanical Keyboard Review

The Glorious Modular Mechanical Keyboard has lasting power and the ability to replace keys with ease.

All keyboards aren’t built the same, and it’s pretty clear when it comes to the Glorious Modular Mechanical Keyboard or GMMK. The GMMK lets you customize and replace keys in a flash, making the keyboard reflect your gaming persona.

Glorious PC Gaming Race has come out with an extremely user-friendly keyboard called the GMMK. I understand that all keyboards are all user-friendly, but the GMMK stands out uniquely. You can get three different versions of the GMMK, the Full Size, Tenkeyless, and Compact. This review is based on the Full-Size GMMK.

Key Swapping

Here is the reason why GMMK is an extremely user-friendly keyboard. The GMMK is the world’s first mechanical keyboard that features swappable switches for Cherry, Gateron, and Kailh brands. The keyboard does come pre-built with the Gateron Brown switches and black keycaps.

Also included in the box was an ESC key that let me switch it out with the already installed ASCEND key. This gave me a glimpse into just how easy it was to replace a key if it ever went bad. Thanks to the keycap puller located on the bottom of the keyboard, it was easy to pull the key off without much effort and effectively place the other key on.

The key swapping technique lets you even mix and match the key types on the GMMK. The Gateron Blues, Cherry MX Clears, Gateron Reds and Browns all provide a different feel and noise level of clicking. Since the GMMK only has the Gateron Browns installed, I wasn’t able to get a feel for what the other switches felt like. However, the Gateron Browns are excellent switches and get the job done.

Design and Software

I’m one of those people who doesn’t need a keyboard to look fancy to decide on purchasing it. Glorious PC Gaming realizes that functionality over looks is essential. Sporting a minimalistic design that makes the GMMK look sleek and the aluminum faceplate is a nice touch for its overall look. The GMMK is a solidly built piece of hardware. My only complaint is that it is on the small side, even for the full-size version.

Customizing the RGB lighting and effects is simple and can be done from the keyboard itself without installing any software. Glorious PC Gaming has done an excellent job leaving enough customizable options without the need for software. You will, however, need the software to program any macros.

The software is sleek and straightforward, with just a picture of the GMMK and dropdown boxes for additional options. Once again, functionality over looks is the main goal from Glorious PC Gaming, and it’s very appreciated. I spent several minutes looking at the different effects and found my personal favorite was Wave #1 with Effect 1.

Verdict

The GMMK is a significant step forward to being able to replace keys and switches on the fly, making it a customizable dream come true. Its minimalistic design and plethora of RGB lighting effects are some of the best I’ve seen on a keyboard to date. While the GMMK Full-Size is a little on the small side, it’s an excellent keyboard for those who are want something they can customize with ease.
