Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that the next installment to the Tomb Raider franchise is currently in development and is being built using Unreal Engine 5. The announcement was made earlier today during Epic Games’ State of Unreal 2022 keynote presentation, which marks the debut of Unreal Engine 5. This will be the first game in the Tomb Raider series since Shadow of the Tomb Raider launched in 2018.
“Our goal is to push the envelope of fidelity and to deliver the high-quality, cinematic action-adventure experience that fans deserve from both Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider franchise,” said Tomb Raider Franchise General Manager Dallas Dickinson during the presentation.
Today’s State of Unreal showcase featured a slide listing all of the studios currently developing projects in Unreal Engine 5. Crystal Dynamics joins CD Projekt Red and a slew of other developers that have chosen to create their games using Epic’s proprietary engine.
Unreal Engine 5 is now available to download for free and offers new features such as real-time rendering and a new open-world toolset. Creators can download and run UE5 from the Epic Games launcher. Head over to the Unreal Engine website for more UE5 details.
