Sony is reportedly working on a next-generation VR system for PlayStation 5, according to a recent post on PlayStation Blog. The new headset will improve upon the features of the original PlayStation VR headset that released in 2016. Sony is also working on an enhanced VR controller inspired by PS5’s DualSense controller.
“We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input,” said Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President of Platform Planning and Management at PlayStation. “It will connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience.”

The new and improved VR system for PS5 will feature a new controller as well, one that draws inspiration from the PS5 DualSense controller’s key features. The new controller will also have an emphasis on ergonomics. “That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences,” Nishino said.
Although the next-gen VR system won’t be available this year, Sony wanted to shed light on the project. “There’s still a lot of development underway for our new VR system, so it won’t be launching in 2021,” explains Nishino. “But we wanted to provide this early update to our fans, as the development community has started to work on creating new worlds for you to explore in virtual reality.”
With Sony’s new VR system in the works, expect to see some new VR titles announced in the year ahead. Perhaps some new VR games will be announced during Sony’s State of Play on February 25. We will be sure to update you on any new PS5 VR developments, so stay tuned to Guide Stash for more.
