PlayStation 5 Price and Release Date Announced

Sony also revealed the PlayStation Plus Collection, an added bonus for PS Plus subscribers on PS5.

Near the end of today’s PlayStation 5 showcase, Sony finally unveiled the release date and price for the PlayStation 5. A slew of new PS5 games were revealed as well, including Final Fantasy XVI, Spider-Man: Miles Morales and a new God of War sequel. We’ve got the details for you below.

PlayStation 5 Release Date and Price

The PlayStation 5 will release on November 12, 2020 in the U.S., Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea, just two days after the launch of the Xbox Series X. The PS5 will finish its global debut on November 19, 2020 when it releases for the rest of the world.

There are two PS5 consoles to choose from: the Standard Edition and the Digital Edition. The latter does not come with a Blu-ray disc drive like the standard version does. PS5 Standard Edition costs $499, matching the pricing of competitor Microsoft’s Xbox Series X console. The Digital Edition, on the other hand, costs $399.

Sony announced that pre-orders for the PS5 would go live tomorrow, September 17. However, in a chaotic twist of events, retailers opened up pre-orders for the console a day early. The process quickly devolved into chaos. Although some shoppers were able to secure their PS5 pre-order, many ran into error pages and out-of-stock notifications. So far, there’s no telling which outlets will restock the console and whether future pre-orders will become available.

PlayStation Plus Collection

Alongside the PS5 price and release date came news of a new feature coming to PlayStation Plus. It’s called the Plus Collection, and it allows PS Plus subscribers to enjoy some of the best PS4 games for free on PS5. The Plus Collection is available only on PS5. The collection includes acclaimed first-party titles such as Bloodborne, God of War, and Monster Hunter World. While it’s not quite a response to the Xbox Game Pass, this does answer some questions regarding PS5 backward compatibility.

PlayStation 5 Launch Day Games

Sony revealed several of the launch day titles coming to PS5 over on PlayStation Blog. SIE Worldwide Studios has several games lined up for launch, including Demon’s Souls, Destruction All Stars, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Sackboy A Big Adventure. Astro’s Playroom will come pre-installed on the PS5 as well.
