Microsoft is rolling out an update that reduces Xbox’s carbon footprint by implementing new energy-saving settings, the company announced today on Xbox Wire. According to the announcement, the update is now available for Xbox Insiders and will roll out to all Xbox users sometime soon.
The update aims to optimize Xbox consoles to make them carbon aware by reducing energy consumption during specific times. This coincides with Microsoft’s sustainability efforts to become “a carbon negative, water positive, and zero waste company by 2030.” As a result of today’s update, Xbox can now be considered the first carbon-aware console.
The update applies new energy-saving settings to the Xbox that impact the console’s overall energy consumption. “This one-time update to your power settings will reduce your power consumption while your console is off, and will not affect performance, gameplay, or your console’s ability to receive overnight updates to system, games or apps,” states today’s Xbox Wire post. The energy-saving settings help to reduce the overall carbon footprint of the console.
