CDPR Explains Why Cyberpunk 2077 Has No Pre-Order Bonuses

CD Projekt Red is aiming to even the playing field for Cyberpunk 2077 players in terms of in-game content.

If you’re among the many players who are itching to dive into Night City in Cyberpunk 2077, you may have already pre-ordered the game from various outlets. Although the game comes with various goodies including the soundtrack and art book, there’s no in-game pre-order bonuses to look forward to for Cyberpunk 2077. Apparently this is intentional, according to the game’s developer, CD Projekt Red.

“No, we don’t do that.”

In a response to a fan who had inquired about in-game pre-order bonuses for Cyberpunk 2077 via private message, a representative for CDPR said, in so many words, that that’s not how they roll. “No, we don’t do that,” said CDPR in the reply. “Every person that buys the game gets exactly the same in-game content, no matter if they buy it in pre-orders, on release date or 2 years later.” A screenshot of the conversation was shared on Reddit.

CD Projekt Red’s efforts are laudable, especially given the current controversy surrounding microtransactions in games. Although Cyberpunk 2077 doesn’t have any in-game pre-order incentives, there’s still some nifty digital and physical merchandise up for grabs across the game’s various editions, as seen in the unboxing video below.

This strategy is essentially the same approach CD Projekt Red took with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt when the game released back in 2015. After the game’s launch, CDPR gradually rolled out a series of free DLC, making it available for anyone who owned the base game. The DLC included new outfits and side quests for players to enjoy without having to spend another dime. Those who didn’t mind investing some extra money into The Witcher 3 could pick up the game’s two huge expansions, which were so packed with content that they were arguably full game experiences of their own. It seems we can expect something similar for Cyberpunk 2077.

For fans looking to brush up on the lore of Night City, CD Projekt Red has also announced The World of Cyberpunk 2077, a lore book companion that will release shortly after the launch of the game. Pre-orders for the official lore book are available now.
