Geoff Keighley returned to the stage to host The Game Awards on Thursday. Winners were announced in various categories throughout the show, with Hazelight Studios’ It Takes Two earning the title of Game of the Year at the end. This year’s show was filled to the brim with world premieres and game announcements. We’ve rounded up the biggest announcements and trailers from The Game Awards 2021 below for those who may have missed the live broadcast.
Alan Wake 2 Coming in 2023
A surprise sequel was announced for Alan Wake with a brief trailer showing a familiar face. Alan Wake 2 will be developer Remedy Entertainment’s first foray into the survival horror genre. The game is expected to release for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2023.
Wonder Woman Game Announcement
Wonder Woman is getting her own open-world, action-adventure game set in the DC universe. The game is being developed by Monolith Productions, the team that made Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. As such, the new Wonder Woman game will feature the same Nemesis System used in previous Middle-earth games to form connections with allies and enemies. No release date or platforms were announced.
Hellblade 2 Gameplay Reveal
The first gameplay for Hellblade sequel Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 debuted during the 2021 Game Awards. Hellblade 2 will be coming exclusively to PC and Xbox Series X/S and will be available through Xbox Cloud gaming. You can watch all six unsettling minutes of footage in the trailer above.
Silent Hill Creator Announces Slitterhead
Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Toyama and his team at Bokeh Game Studio revealed a brief teaser trailer for their upcoming horror game Slitterhead. It’s full of grotesque, terrifying monsters, and we would expect nothing less from a creator like Toyama.
Star Wars Eclipse Reveal Trailer
Detroit: Become Human developer Quantic Dream is working on a new Star Wars game called Star Wars: Eclipse. The game is being made in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games and is set in the High Republic era. The game is described as “an intricately branching action-adventure game that can be experienced in many ways, and puts the destinies of multiple playable characters in your hands.”
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Gameplay
The Game Awards featured the first official gameplay trailer for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the next game coming from Batman: Arkham developer Rocksteady Studios. The game is set to launch in 2022 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
ARC Raiders Gameplay Reveal Trailer
A gameplay reveal trailer for free-to-play cooperative shooter ARC Raiders was shown during The Game Awards. In ARC Raiders, players battle a mechanized alien threat that descends from space. The game is the debut title from Embark Studios, a studio founded by former Battlefield developers. ARC Raiders will release for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC.
Sonic Frontiers Announcement Trailer
Developer Sonic Team is working on a new 3D Sonic game called Sonic Frontiers, which was formally announced with a new trailer during The Game Awards 2021. The game is said to offer “high velocity, open-zone freedom,” which explains the Breath of the Wild vibes given off by the trailer. Sonic Frontiers has a Holiday 2022 release window.
Dune: Spice Wars RTS Announce Trailer
Dune is being made into a real-time strategy game called Dune: Spice Wars. Developed by Shiro Games, the upcoming RTS is expected to release in early access on PC in 2022.
Among Us VR Reveal
Social deduction game Among Us is expanding from 2D into virtual reality, and a new trailer dropped during The Game Awards that shows just what that will look like. Among Us VR will be available for Meta Quest, PlayStation VR, and Steam VR platforms. No release date was announced.
The Matrix Awakens on Consoles
The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience is an interactive tech demo that went live on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles during The Game Awards. It’s completely free to download and play, so you might as well go check it out.
