Sony Announces New PlayStation and Discord Partnership

PlayStation consoles will begin integrating new Discord features early next year.

Sony has announced a new partnership between PlayStation and Discord that will result in new communication features being implemented into PlayStation consoles starting in 2022.

Developers behind the scenes at both companies are reportedly already working on ways to integrate Discord into PlayStation Network. “Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together,” said Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, on the SIE blog.

Alongside the partnership, Sony also announced that they are investing in Discord as part of its Series H round. “From our very first conversation with co-founders Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy, I was inspired by their lifelong love for gaming and our teams’ shared passion to help bring friends and communities together in new ways,” said Ryan. “Empowering players to create communities and enjoy shared gaming experiences is at the heart of what we do, so we are beyond excited to start this journey with one of the world’s most popular communication services.”

Sony didn’t go into detail regarding how Discord’s features will be implemented on PSN. The changes could range from improved communication features to a dedicated Discord app for PlayStation. What we do know is that PlayStation users can expect to start seeing new Discord features on PSN early next year. Stay tuned for further updates on the partnership in the months ahead.
