The third season of Stranger Things is finally here, which means fans can enjoy their summer break in the new Stranger Things game. In Stranger Things 3: The Game, there are 12 playable characters to unlock based on the main characters from the show. You’ll want to figure out how to get each character to utilize their special skills.
Stranger Things 3: The Game is directly based off the third season of the hit Netflix show. As such, we highly recommend you finish watching season three of Stranger Things before diving into the game, as story spoilers are inevitable.
There are 12 characters total that players can unlock in Stranger Things 3: The Game. Each character features their own special ability and weapon, allowing you to adjust your play style during combat based on who is in your party. Most of the playable characters are unlocked through story progression and will require you to complete specific story missions or perform certain tasks. Here’s how to unlock each character in Stranger Things 3: The Game.
#1 & 2 – Mike and Lucas
We’ve combined Mike and Lucas together because both characters are available at the start of Stranger Things 3: The Game. They’re the default characters, so you won’t have to do anything special to get them. You will be able to alternate between the two characters at the beginning of the game.
#3 – Dustin
Unlocking Stranger Things’ self-proclaimed nerd, Dustin, is pretty easy. Just finish the main story quest “Radar Love” to add him to your party. Dustin is a good character to have around, as he is an avid hacker.
#4 – Nancy
After obtaining Dustin, head back to Mike’s Basement. To unlock Nancy as a playable character in Stranger Things 3: The Game, talk to Will in the basement. Nancy becomes available upon starting the “Rat, Paper, Scissors” story mission.
#5 – Jonathan
Once you unlock Nancy, it’s not long until you can recruit Jonathan as well. Continue through the “Coffee Run” quest to bring Jonathan on board.
#6 – Max
You can find Max in Mike’s Basement. However, to unlock Max as a playable character in Stranger Things 3: The Game, you’ll need to finish bringing the old woman to the hospital after clearing the farm. Afterwards, speak to Max in the basement once more to recruit her to your party.
#7 – Eleven
Now that Max has joined the crew, head over to Hopper’s Cabin to find Eleven. Talk to her to unlock her as a playable character and gain access to her Psychic Push ability.
#8 – Joyce
After unlocking Eleven, make sure to stop by the Byer’s house and speak to Joyce there prior to the Hawkin’s Lab mission. Having Joyce join your party will allow you to use her bolt cutters, which come in handy later on.
#9 – Hopper
Once you’ve spoken with Joyce and brought her aboard, she’ll ask you to chat with Hopper. Head back over to Hopper’s Cabin and talk to him to convince him to join your ever-growing party.
#10 – Steve
During the “Scoop Troop” story mission, you’ll eventually need to rescue Steve. Upon doing so, you will add the sailor-clad fellow to your party.
#11 – Erica
To unlock Erica in Stranger Things 3: The Game, you’ll need to finish the “Scoop Troop” story mission, the same one that added Steve to your crew. When it’s finished, Erica will agree to join you.
#12 – Will
Last but not least is Will, who you can recruit after completing the mission in Hawkin’s Lab. He’s not quite as easy to unlock as the other characters, though. Upon returning to Mike’s Basement, speak to Will. He’ll ask you to collect a series of D&D character sheets, which you will need to do if you are hoping to unlock Will as a playable character. He’ll join the party once you return to him with all character sheets in tow.
Now that you know how to unlock every character in Stranger Things 3: The Game, you should be well on your way to saving the townsfolk from the evil creature that’s been terrorizing Hawkins.
