The legendary animals in Red Dead Redemption 2 offer players extremely valuable pelts and parts. Hunting down and killing the legendary animals can be quite difficult, as they must be tracked slightly differently compared with regular game. If you want to unlock all of the Trappers special clothing and gear, you will need to spend some time tracking the many legendary animals across the Wild West.
How to Find Legendary Animals
Though the map might show the location of a legendary animal, actually finding them is another task altogether. To find the animal, enter its general area to receive an on-screen prompt.
You should now begin searching the area for clues. The clues you’re looking for are little question marks on your mini-map. This question mark is the first of three clues you will need to find before you can kill and skin the animal.
Once the first clue has been found, you can use the Eagle Eye ability to follow the trail from one clue to the next. The trail for a legendary animal is gold, unlike the white trail for normal animals.
It’s important to note that the pelts and parts from the legendary animals can only be used at the Trapper for clothes and gear and at the fence to make talismans and trinkets. Also, don’t worry if you can’t get a perfect kill, it doesn’t matter when hunting legendary animals! Even if you kill it with a stick of dynamite, the pelt will still be in prime condition. In fact, even if you lose the pelt, it will appear in the Trapper’s inventory.
Legendary Animals Locations
You can start hunting the legendary animals as soon as you please in Red Dead Redemption 2, though some are locked away in certain missions and far off in West Elizabeth. The only way to reach this lower area is to finish the main story.
Legendary Beaver
The legendary beaver is in New Hanover, south of the Elysian Pool. Follow the river down south, stopping at the little inlet.
Legendary Bharati Grizzly Bear
The legendary Bharati grizzly bear is located in the Grizzlies East area of Ambarino. This great bear is available to hunt after completing the mission, Exit Pursued By A Bruised Ego.
Legendary Bison
The legendary bison is in far-west Ambarino, near Lake Isabella. Search the northern shoreline for the first clue.
Legendary Buck
The legendary buck is in West Elizabeth, north of the Owanjila lake.
Legendary Bullgator
The legendary bullgator is in Lemoyne, in the middle of Bayou Nwa. The bullgator is not available until the Chapter 4 mission, Country Pursuits.
Legendary Coyote
The legendary coyote is in Lemoyne, far north of Rhodes and slightly south of Dewberry Creek.
Legendary Elk
The legendary elk is located north of Cumberland, near Fort Wallace and Bacchus Station.
Legendary Fox
The legendary fox is found in Lemoyne, just north of Rhodes, beside Mattock Pond.
Legendary Moose
The legendary moose is in New Hanover. Go to the far north east corner of the map, near where the river ends, to begin the hunt.
Legendary Ram
The legendary ram is west of Valentine, across the river beside Cattail Pond.
Legendary Wolf
The legendary wolf is located in Ambarino, west of Bacchus Station. Search near the Cotorra Springs to find this wild animal.
Legendary Cougar
The legendary cougar is in New Austin, north west of Tumbleweed, past the Gaptooth Ridge title.
Legendary Pronghorn
The legendary pronghorn is located down in New Austin, east of Rio Bravo. If you reach the Rio Del Lobo Rock, you’ve gone too far.
Legendary Tatanka Bison
The legendary Tatanka bison is located in New Austin, in the eastern side of the region. Locate the MacFarlane’s Ranch and follow the road due south east. The bison is in the grassy flats near the Manteca Falls.
Legendary Giaguaro Panther
The legendary Giaguaro panther is likely the last legendary animal you will need to hunt. The reason for this is the Giaguaro panther is only available after completing the Master Hunter challenge. Go to the south of Lemoyne, and continue past Rhodes until you reach Bolger Glade. This area is east of Braithwaite Manor, west of Shady Belle. Search the area until you find this last legendary animal.
It might take a while to find all the legendary animals in Red Dead Redemption 2 but the rewards are worth the effort. With all the pelts and parts in hand, head to the nearest Trapper or Fence to get your new gear!
