Summoning spirits does not require the use of staff or magic seal. However, it does require a key item called the Spirit Calling Bell, which is given to you by an NPC named Renna. Before you can meet Renna, you must first meet Melina and obtain your Spectral Steed, Torrent, which happens after you’ve discovered your third Site of Grace out in the open world.

After obtaining Torrent, make your way back to the Church of Elleh during the evening. This is where you met the merchant, Kalé. You can rest at the Site of Grace to pass time until nightfall if needed. At night, Renna will be sitting on the wall of the ruins. Talk to Renna and tell her that you can in fact call upon the spectral steed, Torrent. At this point, Renna will give you the Spirit Calling Bell and Lone Wolf Ashes.

To summarize, here are the steps for getting the Spirit Calling Bell:

  1. Meet Melina and obtain Torrent
  2. Return to the Church of Elleh at night
  3. Talk to Renna and say that you can summon Torrent

How to Summon Spirit Ashes

Upon obtaining the bell and what may be your first Spirit Ash, you can now call upon spirits during certain combat scenarios. The spirits are to be assigned to one of your pouch slots for easy access. As for the bell, you don’t need to equip it. Just having it in your inventory is enough.

To summon spirits, start by assigning a Spirit Ash to one of your pouch slots. Next, hold down Y or Triangle and press the corresponding direction on the D-pad for the spirit you wish to summon.

Here are some details to keep in mind when summoning Spirit Ashes:

  • Spirit Ashes can only be summoned when near a Rebirth Monument, as indicated by the ghostly gravestone-like icon on the left side of the HUD.
  • Only one Spirit Ash can be active at a time. You can’t call in more than one type of spirit during an encounter.
  • Summoning Spirit Ashes consumes some FP.
  • Spirits cannot be summoned during multiplayer.
