How to Get Vegetables and Crops

If you’re looking to plant tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, wheat, or sugarcane on your island in New Horizons, you must first acquire some seeds or starts. The best way to get vegetable starts is through Leif, the traveling sloth botanist and plant merchant who visits during the week. Leif is your go-to for all things plants, and the new crops are no exception.

Like most visiting NPCs, Leif will stop by your island once a week with a new selection of seeds and starts for vegetables and other crops. The new crops are also cooking ingredients that can be used in various cooking DIY recipes. Carrot, tomato, potato, wheat, and sugarcane starts cost 280 Bells each and can be purchased individually or in bulk.

Unlock Leif’s Shop on Harv’s Island

If you are eager to begin growing some new vegetables, but can’t make Leif’s weekly island visit, the other option is to unlock Leif’s garden shop by upgrading Harv’s Island. This will allow Leif to build a permanent shop in Harv’s plaza that you can visit at your convenience.

Unlocking Leif on Harv’s Island requires a 100,000 Bell donation, but it’s worth the investment if getting new vegetables to grow is a priority. Leif’s item stock on Harv’s Island will refresh every Monday and will typically differ from what he offers while visiting your island.

Take a Kapp’n Boat Tour

Although Leif is the most reliable method for getting vegetables in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, there is another way to get your hands on some new crops, and it’s by digging them up on one of the mystery islands that Kapp’n takes you to on his boat tour. However, there’s no guarantee you will find vegetables while out on a tour. Plus, each boat tour costs 1,000 Nook Miles and can only be done once per day.

Once you’ve got some tomato, potato, carrot, wheat, or sugarcane starts in your possession, you can go ahead and plant these crops in some dirt. The new vegetables grow similarly to pumpkins in that they will need to be watered daily to produce the highest yield.

Now that you know how to get vegetables in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you can harvest a variety of new edible crops that can be used in various cooking recipes. Check out our guide on how to cook food to learn how to turn your harvest into delicious dishes.
